WALKSacramento Project [Proposed 2/15/17] #20

Description

@reganking

WALKSacramento presentation by Kirin Kumar to Code for Sacramento 2/15/17
Organization website: http://www.walksacramento.org/

Kirin pitched promotional/advocacy, coding, and policy innovation needs to the Code4Sac group and solicited interest for building a Code4Sac team.

Following team hacked a solution for WALKSacramento 9AM-12PM, 2/18/17 @ Hacker Lab Sacramento

** Code4Sac Team**

WALKSacramento Goals

  • By noon, create something people can use today
  • Extract top 50 points of interest observation points from existing audit PDFs
  • QA for new data set
  • Feature: Add marker clusters to map (see Regan’s marker cluster prototype)
  • Integration with a field application <-> Structure of field observation to mirror Fusion Table schema

Results:

Code for Sacramento - Where to Go from Here?

  • WALKSacramento Case Study (TBD Kirin)
  • Tutorial for using Fusion Tables for data exploration / viability / alternatives (TBD)
  • Ideas: Potential integration with municipal Online Service Request Systems (e.g., Rancho Cordova “Fresh Connect” App / "My City Hall”), e.g., cities could share data with WALKSacramento -> Cross-Agency Multiplier

Next Steps
[Suggestions?]

Extended Notes
Please feel free to edit/expand.

Which improvement goals does the project have?

  • Re-position WALKSacramento as an active advocate (currently functioning "behind the scenes")
  • Collection: Innovate the audit collection process with new collection methods
  • Storage: Innovate a central location system and API showing all recommendations to support other advocacy groups and opportunities for expanded use
  • Promotional: Build in a way to show successes, e.g., through better presentation of resulting recommendations and change recipient testimonials (showing outcomes and helping planners better understand the real value)
  • Cross-Agency Multiplier: Connect various agencies like transportation, affordable housing, creek restoration, workplace health advocacy, etc.

Who are the primary recipients/audience of the program improvement?

  • Staff at local jurisdictions
  • Elected officials wanting to make a point in their communities
  • Community members (business, school, advocacy organizations, etc.)
  • WALKSacramento staff

What does an audit entail?

  • Does not start with a checklist since there are too many variables ("millions"?)
  • Physical and Google street view used for initial and follow-up assessments
  • Report requirements are highly dependent on local restrictions, planning groups dynamics, and overall political context
  • Final report format is PDF and not because a "chain of custody" is required by clients

How are audits used?

  • Audits reports provide improvement recommendations to municipal planners
  • ...

Next Steps

  • Solicit Code4Sac interest and determine project feasibility and broad stroke goals
  • Pending Code4Sac evaluation, setup new project
  • Format existing audit data for further access (suggested 6 month process and possibly utilizing intern support)
